Earlier today figure skater Mirai Nagasu became the first ever US woman to land a triple axel at the Winter Olympics.

24-year-old Nagasu from Montebello, California, made history at the Winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea, when she landed a triple axel during her performance.

Only two other women have ever completed the difficult move at the Olympics, Japanese skaters Midori Ito and Mao Asada, making Nagasu the first American woman to do so.

You can watch the amazing feat here:

Effortlessly completing the move during a near flawless and elegant performance, Nagasu skated to success receiving a personal-best score of 137.53.

As the crowd gave her a standing ovation, the Team USA skater threw her fists into the air with joy knowing she had leapt into the history books.

She had previously landed the move in September during another competition.

The triple axel is considered to be one of the most difficult jumps a skate can make being the only jump in which the skater takes to the air while facing forward.

Requiring three-and-a-half rotations before landing, only a few men and women have ever completed one successfully.

Nagasu’s incredible performance helped Team USA win the bronze medal for the team event in figure skating at the Gangneung Ice Arena.

This year’s games were Nagasu’s second Olympics as she wasn’t selected to be a part of the US team in 2014.

Despite finishing third at the 2014 US Figure Skating Championships, fourth-place finisher Ashley Wagner was controversially chosen instead thanks to her stronger international resume.

Nagasu decided to concentrate on the triple axel to come back with style and she sure showed them what she can do on the ice!

Both fans and fellow skaters took to Twitter last night to congratulate Nagasu on her remarkable achievement.

Ashley Wagner wrote:

Just left filming to find out that Mirai Nagasu got her axel called clean in the team competition! So proud of this girl, such an inspiration with what she has done to her career.

So solid. This girl can’t be stopped. What a cool story.

Sports journalist Christine Brennan also applauded Nagasu writing:

Now that’s a reaction. Mirai Nagasu really was terrific. Rose to the occasion. 137.53 points. Just what she needed to do for the Americans.

Writer Lindsay Gibbs also congratulated Nagasu tweeting:

Four years ago, Adam Rippon and Mirai Nagasu were eating In-N-Out burgers in California, crying and watching the Sochi Olympics from their couch. Look at them now.
